What we do and who we are

An older adult falls every minute in Ohio, making falls the #3 cause of death in ages 65 and up. Falls and fall-related injuries can seriously affect older adults’ quality of life and present a substantial burden to the Ohio healthcare system. As a result the Ohio Department of Health created the Ohio Older Adults Falls Prevention Coalition (OOAFPC). The OOAFPC was formed in 2009 and has been in existence for 17 years.

Fall prevention activities include but are not limited to fall risk screenings, home assessment and modification programs, medication screenings, and balance and mobility programs (Ex: A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi for Arthritis ,Stepping On).

The OOAFPC is guided by its 2022-2026 state plan and functions through three committees plus a leadership team. Objectives for the three committees plus leadership contacts and upcoming meeting dates are detailed below.

The Ohio Older Adult Falls Prevention Coalition (OOAFPC) was formed in 2009 as an action group of the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership. Mission

To reduce the risk of falls among older adults by promoting healthy aging through partnerships, education, and policy.

Vision

Older Ohioans will have fewer falls and fall-related injuries, thereby maximizing their independence and quality of life.

WHAT IS A PILOT PROJECT?

The Ohio Older Adult Falls Prevention Coalition (Coalition) of the Ohio Injury Prevention Partnership (OIPP) announces the availability of grants up to $4,000 each.  The purpose of the Coalition is to identify priorities and strategies to reduce fall-related injuries among Ohio’s older adult population.  These grants will be used to further the mission of the Coalition and implement evidence-based interventions designed to reduce the fall risk of community dwelling older adults across Ohio.  For more information about evidence-based strategies, please see the CDC Compendium of Effective Fall Interventions:  What Works for Community-Dwelling Older Adults.  http://www.cdc.gov/HomeandRecreationalSafety/Falls/compendium.html
